Canadian alt-pop whizz Jessy Lanza has revealed that she has a new album called Love Hallucination arriving on July 28 through Hyperdub. She calls it a “trust fall” as it finds her recording in her new home of Los Angeles and working with new producers outside of her usual collaborator Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys (though he still plays a part).
She has shared “Midnight Ontario” from the album, which was co-produced by Lanza and fellow Canadian Jacques Greene. They provide a club-adjacent beat that swings in out of the cold and dominates your mental space, pinging around on futuristic clipped beats and whispering glazes of synth. Lanza is at her whisper-singing best, drawing us into her personal drama before borrowing the famous Blade Runner quote for the low-key devastating chorus “falling like tears in rain”. The existential doubt grows as Lanza reaches her higher register to quiz herself about her life – she doesn’t provide any answers, but the irresistible production suggests she’ll keep on shimmying through the pain.
The video for “Midnight Ontario” is a gorgeous animation made by visual artist Infinite Vibes, who says: “I’m mostly trying to accentuate what I felt from the song which has a beautiful, hazy atmosphere that’s sometimes strangely unsettling – along with homages to LA & Ontario, with references to real life events that are rendered in a dreamy way. It’s based around a technique which I’ve been honing for a couple of years which involves creating 3D animations and augmenting them through AI, in this case Stable Diffusion. It’s been a really fun one to make and I can’t wait to hear the track nice and loud on some dancefloors.”
