Manchester talent Phoebe Green is currently on tour supporting Self Esteem, with similar slots underscoring Everything Everything and Baby Queen coming, but, more importantly, she has her own project on the way – and today she drops the first taster, “Make It Easy”.
On the song, Green says: “The lyrics themselves express the age old dilemma of letting myself get in the way of myself, wanting to be with someone but not wanting to make the first move, it’s possibly the most lighthearted song I’ve ever written and I love it.”
Hovering into earshot on a bed of zapping synths and stylishly programmed drums, the slickness of “Make It Easy” belies the awkwardness at play in Green’s words. While she can act the cool, clever woman on the outside, inside she’s wracked with indecision; “I’ve got too much pride to set myself up for rejection / I let too many opportunities slide before I lay out my intentions,” she admits, before dreaming “wish I could be that bitch that lets it slip off my tongue like it’s nothing.” She’s tying herself in knots trying not to overplay her hand, resulting in a sexual tension that’s electrifying to observe, especially when it’s housed among such bright and infectious pop production. “Let’s make it easy,” she pleads in the chorus – but the titillating torture is so delectable to listen to.
