Cult Boston rockers Pile have announced that they will be releasing a new album called Sunshine and Balance Beams on 15 August through Sooper Records.
They’ve given us the first taste of their ninth full-length in the form of “Born at Night”, an undulating and dramatic rocker that foregrounds vocalist Rick Maguire’s treatise on pervading hopelessness. It starts quietly but quickly builds to waves of tumultuous post-punk reflecting Maguire’s internal struggle. “That patch of earth you’re on has been claimed from you now / And as the future looms it unkindly grips your nerve,” he laments as serrated strings join the fray. However, there is a rigidity to his humanity, and as he repeats the central phrase “I was born at night”, he seems to be saying that he was made for this world and he’s ready to fight for his right to exist within it.
The video for “Born at Night” was directed by Josh Echevarria and stars Shahjehan Khan of the Hulu hit Deli Boys. Watch it below or find the track on streamers.
Pile’s new album Sunshine and Balance Beams arrives on 15 August through Sooper Records (pre-order/save). You can find them on Bandcamp, Instagram and Facebook.
