Great artists make unexpected moves in every song, both lyrically and melodically โ and nobody throws more surprise jabs than LA artist Alex Winston. Her long-awaited sophomore album Bingo!, out today, is drenched in rich harmonies, masterful melodies and razor-sharp (often lol) lyrics.
Case in point: โRun Onโ, which has a fabulous Brit-singalong chorus and these stellar lyrics: โEvery Friday night we try so hard to make it nice / then it devolves into some kind of run on conversation.โ
It’s a rare pop song to use the word โdevolvesโ, yet thereโs not a trace of English Lit 101 in this composition. This entire album is a treasure, from the soaring Americana harmonies of โSwamplandโ to the unforgettable melody of โMikeโs Soupโ.
Winston has had an unusual life journey. She was born and raised in Detroit, yet learned to love the great outdoors. That led to a two-year bout with Lyme disease. Alexโs debut album King Con made a big splash in 2012 thanks to her songwriting skills and classically trained operatic voice.
Every song on Bingo! is so brilliant that it may take you three or four plays to get the full effect. If Stevie Nicks and Townes Van Zandt had a daughter, sheโd sound a lot like Alex Winston. Itโs great to have her back in action with a full-length release.
