If you peer too long into the depths of Meiv‘s hyper-terrestrial debut single, Dedeoka”, some odd things begin to happen. Produced alongside Philadelphia experimentalist Body Meat (aka Christopher Taylor), the track exhibits traits of cosmic pop as seen through the movement of some accelerated gravitational disturbances. The intense pulses are distributed via the integrated creativities of longtime musical partners Curinus, who is based in Tokyo, and Eugene Nx, who resides in Hong Kong. The track also features the vocals of Nx’s daughter, Sara, which provide a glitchy foundation around which the music can ricochet and stretch. It’s pop music beamed in from distant galaxy, born from an alien language we might not have encountered otherwise for hundreds of years, a sonic Rosetta Stone for those adventurous enough to submerge themselves in its torrents. Built upon a lush orchestration of synthetic strings, a bounding 808 bass line, and gyrating rhythms, “Dedeoka” offers a look into the distant future and promises something quite extraordinary.
