LA-based French-Korean artist spill tab just released her debut EP Oatmilk in December, but she’s back with more material already. The new track is called “PISTOLWHIP” and continues the songwriter’s effusive exploration on the pain of romance. She says:
“‘PISTOLWHIP is about going through something that really hurts, and the dichotomy of being angry but also being shot down and vulnerable. I wanted to imagine what it’d be like in the head of someone who’s just finding out they’re being cheated on. They’re vacillating between pure rage and just wanting to hold on ’cause they love that person so deeply, and then the underlying issues of that relationship sort of start to show in the second verse. It’s just a descent into madness I guess.”
spill tab has proven to be a master of miniatures, her songs packing in multiple parts without going much beyond two minutes – a magic trick that continues on “PISTOLWHIP”. It begins in quiet pain, with her muted voice lamenting the impending break up – “I hate you too / lying in the hotel room.” In the wake of finding out about the other’s infidelity it unsurprisingly turns into anger, which she expresses by revealing a desire to “pistol whip you behind your truck.” The song then explodes into a flurry of distortion to emphasise the seriousness she’s putting behind this suggestion – and it turns a violent act into something empowering, catchy and pretty damn badass.
The video for “PISTOLWHIP” was shot in the desert with Jade Sadler and finds spill tab riding a dirt bike for the first time. Watch that below or listen to the song on streaming platforms.
