Viji has a rush of attraction on “Sedative”, announces debut album

London based Austrian-Brazilian talent Viji has announced her debut album So Vanilla, arriving on 27 October through Speedy Wunderground. The title is a tongue-in-cheek reference to her real name, Vanilla Jenner, rather than a comment on its contents. She has shared the lead single from the project, “Sedative”, saying:

“I wrote Sedative about a girl. She’s like a breath of fresh air, and there’s a fine line between friendship and attraction that was hard to navigate. Usually when I meet someone like that I wanna ‘be’ that person, but this time I wanted to be with her.”

The song’s galloping guitars give us a taste of Viji’s fast-beating heart, while her vocals transmit that feeling of nervousness, of not wanting to make a fool of herself in front of this new crush. We hear her spiralling through questions of attraction and rejection, her thoughts caught up in the song’s frenetic pace. “I hate that I’m desperate” she laments in the anthemic chorus, reflecting that feeling we’ve all surely experienced in the face of someone we think is way too cool to ever associate with us. Ultimately, though, Viji’s attraction overwhelms and she confesses “London’s not as cool without you”. Fingers crossed it lands well with her crush.
