The War On Drugs announced their new album a couple of months ago with the plaintive opener “Living Proof”. It’s been a long wait for more morsels from the album, which arrives at the end of October, but today they come launching back with the title track “I Don’t Live Here Anymore”, which finds them teaming up with Lucius.
Returning to their beloved road-tripping-under-an-endless-sky style, “I Don’t Live Here Anymore” begins with Adam Granduciel in his bed, admitting that he’s been “afraid of everything.” From there, The War On Drugs launch forward on luminous stadium-sized chords as their singer comes to a hard-fought personal epiphany; realising that good times aren’t going to make themselves – he’s going to have to go out there and grab them. Imagery abounds as he undergoes this process; “time surrounds me like an ocean / my memories like a wave,” Granduciel sings, “is life just dying in slow motion / or getting stronger everyday?” Ultimately, as Lucius’ harmonies come clear, he affirms “I’m gonna make it to the place I need to go,” and The War On Drugs’ music carries him on a wave of beautiful determination to wherever he needs to be.
They’ve also got a whole load of dates in North America and Europe:
