Jade Imagine find urgency in fun on “Instinct That I Wanna Know”

You get the sense Melbourne trinity Jade Imagine love to dip their brush in all sorts of sensibilities. Their new tune “Instinct That I Wanna Know” amalgamates a palette of Air’s feathery French alt-pop, mild hints of shoegaze, the hook-driven approach of contemporary indie rock, the ethereal release of early-00s dance music…. all of that goodness imbued within, without it sounding in any way contrived. It’s quite – well how do I put it – instinctual, not to mention quite a remarkable feat in the span of just over two minutes.

According to the band, “Instinct That I Wanna Know” is an ode to ESP – feeling spiritually in sync with those closest to you. The video is a supercut of shared moments of fun between the band members.

It’s taken me a really long time to unlearn the notion that to make art that’s worth anything you need to suffer or be really tortured in one way or another,” the band’s main songwriter Jade McInally says. “I think it’s a side effect of growing up in the 90s being surrounded by all the idols I had like Kurt Cobain, Elliot Smith, etc… ‘The Instinct That I Wanna Know’ film clip is an ode to art being fun and intuitive. I had the best time filming it. It was about the feeling and process just as much as the end result, and that is something I’m super proud of because that’s how I wanna live this life.”

“Instinct That I Wanna Know” is another enticing slice unveiled prior to Jade Imagine’s forthcoming LP Cold Memory, released via Marathon Artists on October 21st (preorder it here)
