døssi mourns her fading memories on the stirring “beloved sun”

døssi, aka Bergen, Norway-based songwriter and producer Ingrid Døssland, is still in the early stages of career, taking long intervals between her singles to ensure they are crystallised before being released to the world. Today she’s shared a new one called “beloved sun”, which comes from a place of quiet melancholy – but, although it sounds sad, it was a healing process for the singer. She says:

“To me, writing about what’s bothering me and what makes me sad, is a very good way to channel out those feelings. It makes more space for me to be happy and lively. I think a lot about my feelings, and I’m always trying to figure out why I feel certain ways. As soon as I have figured it out, I let myself move forward, not lingering on what made me sad or mad in the past.”

“beloved sun” begins with purely døssi’s gentle voice and finger-picked guitar, leaving ample space for her ruminations to take shape through her carefully-chosen words. She’s “wide awake, seizing the day” at the start, trying to stop happy memories from slipping into greyness of her mind. The titular “beloved sun” could be the literal sun, or it could be the warmth that she receives from revisiting these cherished times. “I wish your memories would stick to mind / And let your stories be mine, oh my / For a little while,” she laments. As døssi continues to follow her trail of late night thoughts through “beloved sun”, she nimbly starts to add more layers to the song, first harmonising with herself, then adding a subtle synth tone, then a deeper male vocal, and finally some caressing vocal melodies. It all brings a little more warmth to “beloved sun”, as if she has accessed these memories and is enjoying living in them – even if it’s just for a little while.
