Anna B Savage displays musical and emotional dynamism on “in|FLUX”, announces new album

Anna B Savage will release a new album called in|FLUX on February 17 through City Slang. It follows up her excellent debut album A Common Turn (one of our albums of 2021) and features outstanding recent single “The Ghost”.

Alongside the album announcement, Savage has also released the title track, revealing: “’in|FLUX exemplifies the ‘flux’ as I see it between two seemingly disparate parts of me; my music, my mind and my creativity. The first half is a close, vulnerable and quiet start, full of introspection, vulnerabilities and a stilted inability to express something. From there, the song unfurls in to a second half that is more certain, more vocal and expressive of self-assuredness. These feel like two states (along with everything in between, as well) that I inhabit simultaneously as dynamic and multifaceted emotional human.”

Aside from being as intelligent and emotionally on-point as we’ve come to expect from Savage, “in|FLUX” also introduces some new sonic ideas to her palette that she utilises just as commandingly. The opening finds her in familiar territory, picking over a break up in frank terms that cut both ways, the singer bearing her pain openly. An icy beat kicks in and transports the song through the remainder of her revelations, but soon a squelchy synth takes over and Savage’s confidence comes spewing out: “I want to be alone / I’m happy on my own” she repeats, battling her doubts with growing conviction. It provokes her to a friskier and more vocally expressive realm than we’ve heard before – and even though some demons still linger around the edge, we hear the fully-formed, independent and confident performer coming into her own.
