Sophia Kennedy matches a spiky post-punk angularity with a feeling of overt volatility on her latest single, “Hot Match”. The beat is constant and unwavering; the gravitational pull of its emotional magnitude is overwhelming. Her voice is unceasing in its solar ferocity, a thing of wonder and dread that transports you to places you’d rather not visit. The latest offering from her forthcoming album, Squeeze Me, the song displays a knack for melding austere rock rhythms and clockwork architecture. It deftly balances between restraint and catharsis, finding common ground between its myriad influences.
“‘Hot Match’ is my first rock’n’roll song,” explains Kennedy. “But instead of guitars, I used squealing car tyres, all carried by a stoic motorik beat. It shifts between an underlying sense of paranoia and absurd slapstick. You don’t have to understand it, you just have to feel it.“
