Video Premiere: Cassorla – “I Am” (feat. Crash from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros)

It’s good to have friends.  And for Los Angeles/New York City/Philadelphia indie rock transplants Cassorla, these friends just happen to be actress Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Rec) and musicians Eric Earley (Blitzen Trapper), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Crash (Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros), Krystle Warren, Henry Wolfe, and Elizaveta.  On the band’s upcoming Amigos EP, they bring out these friends to help fill out their ranks — and with a title like that, its almost assumed.  Peddling chugging guitar riffs, sax (courtesy of Plaza), and off-kilter rhythms, Cassorla make music indebted to a dozen different bands but manage to impart their own unique stamp on the notes.  This isn’t simple artistic appropriation but a sustained re-imagining of their influences.

On their latest video for Amigos-cut “I Am,” the band brings on Crash from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros to help out with the vocal duties.   Pairing their back-and-forth conversation with thick guitar spikes, warbling keyboard, and kaleidoscopic visual effects, the song takes on the form of a half-remembered dream — or that moment when you’re not quite awake and not quite asleep, where everything seems just slightly off.  And if you want to sing along, go right ahead.  Director Louis Fried has obligingly worked the song’s lyrics into the video’s often abstract composition.

Beats Per Minute is pleased to premiere the video for “I Am” from Cassorla’s upcoming Amigos EP.
