Vancouver power poppers The Shilohs have the unerring ability to disappear completely into any of their influences. That’s not to say that they wholly submerge their own musical identity, only that the band is able to channel the spirit of bands like The Byrds and Big Star without seeming to rely on cheap mimicry or rote imitation. Continuing the now canonical sounds of breezy west coast pop that grew out of the early 70’s, the band melds jangling guitars, layers of sunny harmonies, and percussion that’ll have you tapping your toes in no time. It would be easy to simply succumb to the temptation to impersonate their musical idols but The Shilohs strive for (and achieve) something far more difficult. By acting as an impressionistic canvas for their own musical proclivities and preferences, they are able to successfully commune with the spirits of their influences without becoming a caricature of those same artists. On their recently released record, So Wild, the band manage to effortlessly showcase their wildly imaginative take on this 70’s pop aesthetic.
For their recent single, the airy, bright jangle pop euphoria of “Get Ready Now,” the band draws on girl-group rhythms and Byrds-ian vocal harmonies that practically radiate the warmth of summer. And their latest video for the track — an in-studio(bedroom) performance of the song — finds the band diving headfirst into the chiming guitars and hook-y percussion for which they’ve become known. Displaying the casual ease born from a communal familiarity, the video shows the band taking their influences firmly in hand and showing us why we should feel the same way that they do about these particular artists. It’s hard to deny that they make a compellng case.
Beats Per Minute is pleased to premiere the live video for “Get Ready Now,” taken from The Shilohs’ recent album, So Wild.
