Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, has died.
Jobs, who had been battling pancreatic cancer since 2004, was 56 years old. He relinquished his role as CEO earlier this year.
He is listed on over 300 patents for various technological inventions. On October 23, 2001, Jobs announced the first version of the iPod, which would go on to revolutionize not only the portable music medium, but the entire music industry. The longtime voice, face and mind of Apple, Jobs is also known for the world’s most popular phone and tablet computer, the iPhone and iPad.
He is survived by his wife, their three children, and a fourth child from a prior relationship.
Apple’s statement regarding Jobs’ passing is below:
Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve lost a dear friend an an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.
