Luna Li dissociates on the harp-inflected bop “Confusion Song”, announces new album

Luna Li has announced a new album called When A Thought Grows Wings, which arrives on 23 August through In Real Life/AWAL. The LA-based Toronto native has also shared the lead single “Confusion Song”, saying:

โ€œItโ€™s the stream of consciousness that my mind went through following a break-up; the denial your subconscious and body can have for a while when thatย one person wonโ€™t be in your life anymore.โ€

While the pain of a fresh heartbreak is there in Li’s voice, it is cushioned by gorgeous modern pop production provided by Li and her co-producersย Monsuneย (SZA, Drake) andย Andrew Lappinย (Lโ€™Rain). A simple beat is overlaid with teasing guitars and flutters of harp that make the singer’s thoughts come across like fleeting feelings rather than the heavy hurt they really are. Li’s vocal coasts comfortably on the production, adding an addictive aloofness to her searching for answers about what went wrong. “Confusion Song” is chameleonic; it is both a song to wallow in but also one that can be heard as dismissing the past and getting ready for the next great thing to happen.
