XVOTO eviscerate an ex on the bumping “Catacumbas”

XVOTO, the London-based duo comprising American/Spanish talent Jazz Alonso and HMLTD guitarist/producer Saigon Fury, have returned with their first new music since last year’s debut EP. The new single is called “Catacumbas” and they say:

“Catacumbas is a comic strip about a girl who, having moved on from her ex boyfriend, sees him as a zombie trapped in the past. She taunts him and keeps renouncing him, insisting that they’ll only ever see each other again in the catacombs (Catacumbas) e.g. when they’re dead.”

The immediate comparison point when first hearing “Catacumbas” is Rosalía, not just because of the Spanish language, but because of the feisty attitude and the bumping, bass-heavy production. This track is pure XVOTO though, and that “comic strip” feeling they describe certainly comes through in the luminous melodies and tones. It’s enhanced by the way that Alonso’s voice hops around from cutting bars to fluttering melodies, bringing plenty of action and excitement to the piece. There’s no doubt XVOTO are leaving their ex way in the rearview, and moving ahead with their own lives, full of swagger.

On the video, they say: “We shot the video in Scicli, Sicily, an area full of catacombs, caves and abandoned churches. It’s primarily a performance video of us taking over the town. We tried to contrast rustic Mediterranean life with our cartoonish visuals.”
