PUP explore machine romance on “Robot Writes A Love Song”, announce new album

Toronto quartet PUP have remained active through the pandemic with a series of releases, but will deliver the proper follow up to their awesome 2019 album Morbid Stuff on April 1, with a new album called THE UNRAVELLING OF PUPTHEBAND. It was recorded with Peter Katis in his bat-filled Connecticut mansion over the course of five weeks in summer 2021.

We already heard “Waiting” from the record, and today they unleash a new one called “Robot Writes A Love Song”, which does exactly what its title suggests: tells a tale of romance and heartbreak from the perspective of a machine. Maybe mawkish, mostly hilarious, it finds the protagonist bot mourning the loss of his partner, waiting for them to come back so they can be loaded into a new machine. It then rolls back to the first time they met – “you nearly put me in a cardiac arrest / it was way too much data to process.” Underpinning this earnest silliness is the usual PUP power punk barrage, but produced and honed to make their most detailed and rewarding arrangement yet.

The video for “Robot Writes A Love Song” takes the concept even further. Watch it below or find the song on streaming platforms.

PUP’s new album THE UNRAVELLING OF PUPTHEBAND arrives on April 1 through Rise / Little Dipper. Follow PUP on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.
