Pollena looks for the light at the end of the tunnel on jittery “Running”

London-based artists Pollena has been on a winning streak with her recent singles. “Stand Up” in particular from earlier this year caught our attention, and new single “Running” has us just as transfixed. Out now on Team Talk Records, Pollena (aka Sarah Brown) says of her new single:

This past year we’ve all been more disconnected and on edge. Sometimes it feels like we’re constantly just trying to get through it with whatever addiction helps. ‘Running’ is my way of trying to make sense of this sort of relentless and unpredictable pace of life that seems sort of normal now. I’m trying to understand it and I’m trying to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Contrasting the diamond-like sheen to “Stand Up”, “Running” has a skittish feel to it, its lower end taking the focus with percussive lilts and a bass drum that curdles in distortion when it hits. “Can’t find the time to be who I want to be,” Brown worries at the track’s start; she sounds like she’s putting together all the pieces of the song together in real time, moments of clarity appearing in the song’s chorus. It’s in the final minute though that “Running”‘s groove locks into place and suddenly you feel like you’re on a strobe-lit dancefloor. Brown might still be “running from [her]self” during this lucid final minute, but she sounds unquestionably at home in the surroundings she is fleeing through.
