Overcoats release high-energy remix of talker’s “Sad Chick”

Overcoats have just released a remix of LA artist talker’s “Sad Chick” – a poignant, darkly comic song about a young woman who feels depressed and broken. When you hear Overcoats’ remix, the first thought is: “Who knew that depression could be this danceable?”

Overcoats vocalists Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell are arguably the best harmony singers in pop today – right up there with all-time greats like Simon & Garfunkel and the lads from Liverpool. They say:

“When talker asked us to remix ‘Sad Chick’ we were thrilled. The song is so catchy, so for the remix we just tried to pick some of our favorite moments and emphasize them. We tried to make it a bit grungier and dancier at the same time and, as always, we snuck some of our own vocals in, too!”

One of the eight standout tracks from talker’s In Awe Of Insignificance EP, “Sad Chick” portrays someone whose outer demeanor doesn’t always match her inner turmoil. “Since I’m really good at functioning and being productive despite my emotions, people tend to think I’m doing totally okay and don’t necessarily have certain struggles,” says talker. “It’s a double-edged sword because I’m really not looking for people to know, or to have that type of attention. But it also means that sometimes people might not feel that they can relate to me about some of this. In reality, I’m often just trying to throw myself into the one thing I can control when I feel totally chaotic internally, which is my own productivity and self-discipline. I think a lot of people swing back and forth between that and the crippling, unable-to-get-out-of-bed type of depression.”

Adds talker: “The song is both autobiographical and archetypal. I have definitely, on more than one occasion, left my laundry in the washer for several days and then had to re-wash them. I actually haven’t made it a full week but I think my record is four days. I haven’t had my car towed from losing my keys but I definitely have lost my keys for multiple days. Luckily, I didn’t need to leave the house. I think the song is a combination of some very real things that I have experienced, but also things that I know some of my friends have gone through as well.”
