Asheville-based Brazilian-American artist Indigo De Souza recently announced her new album Any Shape You Take and shared the cathartic lead single “Kill Me”. Today she returns with a second glimpse of her upcoming album with a single called “Hold U”, saying:
“I wanted to write about a really simple kind of love that isn’t necessarily romantic, but that is just about holding space for other people to fully express themselves and to feel celebrated. Just simply seeing someone in their humanity and loving them. We are constantly evolving and we only truly have space to process our lives openly if we feel safe and are encouraged to love ourselves and celebrate our bodies. I am really blessed with the sense of community that I have in my life, and I wanted to highlight that in this video. Community is the purest kind of magic and can heal so much trauma and pain. We all just want to feel truly held by the people around us!“
To match the more wholesome theme, De Souza streamlines her sound into a more pop-oriented effort for “Hold U”. A crispy click runs beneath, while her voice is soft and friendly as she opens: “You are a good thing, I’ve noticed / and I want a good thing with you.” Accepting that “I’ve got you and I would do anything for you,” De Souza runs with this feeling of connection, injecting lively guitar and drums to “Hold U” and uplifting it to a danceable indie funk jam, with a simple refrain of “it’s gonna be alright.” The sheer happiness of the song radiates more and more brightly as “Hold U” progresses, with De Souza throwing down more affirmations like “I would go anywhere with you,” the smile on her face audible in her shining voice. A song for friend groups, communities and teams everywhere, “Hold U” is an infectious reminder that we’re not alone – and it’s with the support of each other that we can reach new heights, something that she reflects as her falsetto scales beautiful heights in the song’s magnificent finale.
The video for “Hold U” taps into the theme of community even more deeply, and is a truly uplifting watch. Take a look below or listen to the song on streaming platforms.
