Horsegirl deliver an anthem for all in “Anti-glory”, announce debut album

Hyped young Chicago trio Horsegirl will release their debut album Versions of Modern Performance on June 3 through Matador. They’ve shared the lead single “Anti-glory”, saying:

We wrote Anti-glory almost by accident, while messing around with an old song during rehearsal. The song fell into place immediately, and looking back, we have no idea how we wrote it. As always, this song and album are for Chicago, our friends, our friend’s bands, everyone who can play the guitar, and everyone who can’t play the guitar.”

It must be nice to be able to write a jam as lovable as “Anti-glory” “by accident”, but such is the evident talent of Horsegirl. The song, and album as a whole, was recorded with John Agnello, and “Anti-glory” certainly has some of the hallmarks of bands he’s previously worked with, like Dinosaur Jr. and The Breeders, as it has a throwback alt-rock aesthetic that accentuates the simple but catchy melodies that are so cleverly interwoven. What’s entirely Horsegirl is the character of the song; a yearning for connection while feeling disaffected, leaving them to simply repeat “Dance, dance, dance / with me” in the jagged but effective chorus.

Last year’s single “Billy” will also appear on Versions of Modern Performance, which comes out on June 3 through Matador (pre-order/save). You can catch them on Twitter, Instagram and Bandcamp.
