Hatchie sends a message to her depressed self on the dramatic “Giving The World Away”

We’ve already heard “This Enchanted” and “Quicksand” from Hatchie‘s forthcoming debut album, but today we get to hear the title track “Giving The World Away”.

The rising Australian star introduces it by simply revealing “Giving The World Away’ is about being gentle with yourself in the throes of depression.”

That’s a surprise, because, sonically, “Giving The World Away” is not that gentle, it’s foregrounded with a crunchy guitar tone and a forthright beat, while all around is a bubbling and percolating piano melody – all of which combines to create something akin to Chromatics cold and cool take on pop. Her vocal is similarly bright even as it’s filled with that dejection brought on by depression. The combination brings a darker edge than Hatchie’s usual wan soundscapes, which makes you think twice about the simple message she’s putting forward; don’t over-exert yourself, don’t always be a people pleaser, look after yourself.

Listen to “Giving The World Away” via the lyric video below or find it on streaming platforms.
