Evan Wright strolls between past and future on the nostalgic “People”

If you haven’t yet been charmed by Evan Wright through recent singles like “IDM” and “Ride” then a) how?? and b) you’re in luck, as today he shares a final single before the arrival of his debut album, Sound From Out The Window next week. Today’s new offering is the album opener, “People”, and Wright says:

“When I’m writing, I’m always having my iPhone voice memo recording just in case it catches me singing lyrics that I would never be able to sit down and write. I always listen back to them and write down what I was singing or mumbling. It’s a song that deals with nostalgic feelings and wanting to relive old experiences again, but coming to terms that they are just fading memories.”

Memories and nostalgic thoughts often arrive in your mind fragmented and fragile, and Wright has magnificently captured those qualities on “People”. His whisper-singing is enshrouded in warm acoustic and pinging harpsichord, protecting his gentle thoughts like a candle he doesn’t want to blow out. “People need something to hold on / Things that they keep just to go on / Nothing will stay with us too long,” he muses in the subtly profound chorus, while quivering electroacoustic tones fill the atmosphere like faded images of the past rising and disintegrating in his mind’s eye. While there’s an unavoidable melancholy to “People”, by its winsome countrified finale, we feel as though Wright has been mildly uplifted by this trip into the past, but is ready to stroll into whatever and whoever the future brings.
