Charlotte Dos Santos is entwined in magnetic love on the honeyed “Away From You”

Brazilian-Norwegian artist Charlotte Dos Santos returns today with “Away From You”, her first new music since last year’s Harvest Time EP. The new song is about being unapologetically smitten with someone, as she explains:

“‘Away From You’ is a song about being in love and not wanting to be with anyone other than your one person. It’s an r&b/pop song for folks in love and wanting to move. The song was written after a bike ride and a cute day outside and I wanted to capture that feeling. I wanted to write an uplifting track after such a heavy year and especially after really longing for dancing, and being outside with friends and loved ones.”

That atmosphere of overwhelming and overpowering attraction is palpable throughout “Away From You”. Sugary strings and a tasteful beat set the tone, and Dos Santos follows up with a ripe vocal in which she sings of innocently riding bikes and making out. As a flute flutters into the song, the sweetness is amplified, ushering in the unguarded chorus: “You’re the only one I’m needing / the only one I’m feeling.” Even as we head into a second verse, where Dos Santos continues to sing out her unbridled adoration of her loved one, “Away From You” never tips into being too saccharine – her voice and natural coolness ensures that it remains a tasteful and simply delectable bop.

The video has a certain air of Britney’s “Slave 4 U” about it, and Dos Santos says:

The video is a reference to that, the freedom that we lost, and how we find it again – love and movement will always live and thrive despite everything. This is the first video of this journey of exploration of heritage, identity and happiness.”
