Boy Wonder

Canadian alt-rockers Dizzy share the wounded, wistful “Close”

Dizzy have a knack for capturing moments that are usually too difficult to fully express. Their songs seem to exist in fluid motion, coaxing out intense feelings with a subtlety and undeniable grace. We’ve heard this on recent singles “Open Up Wide”, “Birthmark” and “Barking Dog”, which precede the new self-title album, arriving in August.

Their latest, “Close” is no exception, and offers perhaps their most overtly pretty effort to date. Propelled by gentle percussion and muted, nearly pained guitar, the song explores the difficulties of maintaining of a lifelong friendship, and all the ups and downs that come along with such a bond.

Singer Katie Munshaw reflects on the track’s genesis, sharing, “Back in 2019 we were on tour in Eau Claire, Wisconsin when the wheel bearing on our van went kaputz on American Thanksgiving. It was a hard day but the only thing I can really remember about it is laughing in the mechanics waiting room and then finding our way back to a hotel with a bottle of green room whiskey. We’ve been through a lot as a band but we always manage to reconnect on itchy hotel beds between episodes of family guy. Close is about a lot of things but mainly it’s about the comfort Mack, Charlie and Alex bring me.

Accompanied by a deceptively simple video, directed by Toronto artist Boy Wonder, “Close” hits with a visceral gut punch. It’s a wallop well worth experiencing.
