Camera Obscura lean into delightful naïvety on “We’re Going to Make It In A Man’s World”

Scottish heroes Camera Obscura are releasing a new album called Look To The East, Look To The West in May – their first for 11 years. Following on from lead single “Big Love” they’ve now shared “We’re Going To Make It In A Man’s World”, a co-write between vocalist Tracyanne Campbell and keyboardist Donna Maciocia. Campbell says:

“This is a co-write with Donna, one of the first of many songs we have since written together. It is a bit tongue-in-cheek with a serious message at its core. As middle-aged women in the music industry, are we relevant? Who is interested in us? Where’s our place in an industry where women are so underrepresented?”

A lighthearted soufflé of an indie track, like thew kind Camera Obscura churned out by the bucket load in their heyday, “We’re Going to Make It In a Man’s World” is sheer grin-inducing delight. Characterised by graceful pedal steel and whispering keys, it finds Campbell singing free-spiritedly about the possibilities for women in the male-dominated music industry, skirting over the harsh realities and imbalances. Instead she radiates pure unvarnished positivity and projects the simple message of hope and determination: “We’re gonna make it in a man’s world”.
