Braids revel in dreamy expanses and emotional connectivity on “Retriever”

Montreal-based trio Braids are back with a vengeance, sharing a new 9-minute single called “Retriever”. Their last record was 2020’s Shadow Offering, and last year, we got two castaways from those studio sessions in the form of standalone singles “Slayer Moon” and “2020”. The band has never been shy about their ambitions. Their albums have always had moments of dreamy grandeur and propulsive excess, but it’s all in service to a specific vision of what they are experiencing at any given moment. “Retriever” coasts along on a bed of ethereal vocals and skewed pop movements which find the band luxuriating in the emotional opportunities these sounds provide.

“[Retriever] is a 9-minute journey track, simple in its sentiment of love and friendship, yet complex in its lush arrangement and textural experimentation,” the band explains. “We returned to our roots with this one, exploring new corners of sound, collaboration and a ‘DGAF’ attitude with where we ended up. This song is a trip back to euphoric freedom and lightness during a time of intense isolation. We were happy to travel there, and for you to now dive into it.”
