Welsh songwriter Ailsa Tully has returned with her first new music since last summer’s beautiful Holy Isle EP. The new single is called “Salt Glaze” and comes from a very delicate place, as she explains:
“My Grandma passed away a few years ago and the house remained unchanged, it was like a museum of salt glaze ceramics and abstract art pieces which began to absorb into my creativity. This song is about that space and how my partner and I tried to make it feel like home during that period while also knowing that it wasn’t ours. It’s ultimately a song about acceptance, balance and letting things be.”
From the opening billows of guitar and slight rustles of violin, we’re firmly in place in Tully’s memory of her grandmother’s house, light streaming through the windows in the morning. As the song progresses, what unfolds is possibly her most dynamic arrangement yet, with tactile instrumentation playing an intertwining set of dynamic but unshowy melodies. This gives “Salt Glaze” a feeling of ever-shifting, and we can perfectly place her in the moment, stuck between the past and future – wanting to grip onto priceless memories even though the future, and reality, pulls her unforgivingly onwards. It’s a song that is simultaneously tough and tender, and invites you to vividly remember your lost loved ones, even just for a few minutes.
