There’s something overwhelmingly immersive about the latest single from London-based composer and producer Sam Beste, who operates under the guise of The Vernon Spring. “Other Tongues” paints a picture of familial turmoil, of communal bonds frayed and fractured by a world that prizes trite affirmations over honesty. The track is a collaboration with aden — a Brooklyn-based vocalist, producer, writer, and astrophysics PhD candidate — and its hymnal appearance belies a mysterious interior, filled with whispered passages and a growing sense of unease.
As the song continues in its fluid gait and becomes unmoored to any recognizable genre, a sense of anticipation begins to grow, an expectation of things to come. Moments of instrumental dissonance entangle with gorgeous piano tones, creating a cinematic expanse of hissing beauty captured in a series of ephemeral soundscapes.
