Matt Berninger, frontman and lyricist for The National, will release his sophomore solo album, Get Sunk, on May 30 via Book/Concord Records. He worked with Grammy Award-winning producer and engineer Sean O’Brien on the record. O’Brien also co-wrote many on the songs.
Creativity abhors a vacuum, and so Berninger was aided in his journey by a cadre of likeminded musicians, including Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), Julia Laws (Ronboy), Kyle Resnick (The National, Beirut), Garret Lang, Sterling Laws, Booker T Jones, Harrison Whitford, Mike Brewer, and The Walkmen’s Walter Martin and Paul Maroon.
Lead single “Bonnet of Pins” is a churning slice of detail oriented world-building, surrounded by tidal forces that threaten to overwhelm anyone within earshot. It stays firmly within Berninger’s emotive wheelhouse but expands and refines his approach to processing emotional minutiae.
