If “One Half” is anything to go by, then Julianna Barwick is both sticking to the formula from her last album The Magic Place and expanding outwards. Or inwards. It’s hard to tell with Barwick’s ethereal music, but on “One Half,” the first cut to be heard from her forthcoming album Nepenthe, she funnily enough splits things into two segments. The first is full of peaceful reverberated vocals and strings, like something from the closing moments of Valtari, before a pause that leads to some clear and beautiful vocals. Amiina make one of their appearances as streaks of violins fade the song out. It’s like living through the sight of some natural beauty, but it’s hard to say what you’re seeing exactly. Sometimes it’s best just to experience it. Thus, listen below.
