Most pop songs plod along predictably, but every now and then you hear a composition that’s like a musical geyser – an awe-inspiring eruption that’s molten and magical. LA artist Cate Selna’s new single “sheesh” is that type of song – a profound and primal experience.
It’s ironic that a song this volcanic was created in the vacuum of silence. “‘sheesh’ came out of stillness,” says Selna. “I made it late one night in my house in LA, probably chasing a feeling of control. I played the raw demo for a close friend about two years ago, and she immediately encouraged me to finish it and to build the rest of my EP currency around that energy. I brought the bones to a friend’s studio in Highland Park, then finished it with the rest of currency in another friend’s studio in Berkeley. To me, ‘sheesh’ is about owning your power and time without needing to explain it.”
Cate is a protean singer, able to bend her voice to the project at hand. For example, last year’s “melt” felt almost like a tribute to Joni Mitchell, with its exquisite harmonies and precision. Sheeeeesh, this is one rising star you don’t want to miss.
