Florist have returned with a new single called “This Was A Gift”, which is gently breathtaking song about human connections forged through music.
Singer Emily Sprague explains: “’This Was A Gift’ is a love song about enduring difficult seasons of life with the people that we keep close. It is a musical push and pull that mirrors and describes the process of becoming vulnerable to heartbreak and loss that leads to the acceptance of eventual endings and appreciation of community. The band developed and grew with this song over the course of two years of live touring before committing it to recording, further deepening the roots of its meaning.”
Drummer Felix Walworth (aka Told Slant) adds: “It became a staple of our live set over the last few years, and represents (at least to me) our convergence into the invisible center between the four of us. i mean that in a musical sense but also in an emotional/spiritual sense. When i hear this song, I can hear that attunement—all of us exist in it and none of us exist. If that makes sense to you, cool!”
There is a mournful quality to “This Was A Gift” to begin, but it seems to be one borne out of the idea that nothing is universal – except the connections we have with people, especially those whom we hold dearest, who become confidantes and collaborators. Sprague’s lyricism touches on the tiny details and invisible moments that add up to an unbreakable relationship, all of it bound together by music – “I just want music in my life / I just want us to sing along”. By the time it finishes, “This Was A Gift” is still quiet and contemplative, but there is a victorious quality that emanates from the four life forces that are audibly conjoined and playing on the track.
