Canadian collective Crack Cloud have announced their new album Red Mile for release on July 26 through their new label home Jagjaguwar. Sharing some words on the inspiration for the record, Zach Choy said:
“The music of Red Mile came naturally, and of its own volition.
The Mojave had an elemental effect.
The seemingly never-ending labyrinth of touring into exhaustion that characterized preceding years.
And the externalization of Crack Cloud’s mythology, displaced and dismantled as we’ve grown out of ourselves, constantly, creatively reborn, by virtue and design.
This is how I would describe Red Mile, and more generally, the group’s freefall, nearly a decade in the making.“
The idea of creative rebirth is alive in lead single and video “Blue Kite”, with the band sounding fresh and full of ideas. While still in the same lineage as their art-rock/post-punk earlier work, the new song is more instrumentally expansive, with synths, guitars and violins stretching out like clouds across the inspirational Mojave. Lyrically, Choy pokes makes reference to exhaustion and former addictions, but as the song makes clear, both vocally and instrumentally, he and Crack Cloud as a whole are moving on to grander and more exciting things.
