Hatchie works through the struggle on the cathartic “Quicksand”, announces new album

That’s right, Hatchie is back, and not a moment too soon. Given the ever-cramped reality of our COVID-stricken world, the creator of the searching, emotive Keepsake reemerging couldn’t be more welcome.

However, she’s not resting on her laurels, not in the least. Rather with her sophomore LP, Giving the World Away, she’s set to expand her sound by veritable leaps and bounds. Having shared “This Enchanted”, she now properly reveals the project with lead single “Quicksand”. She reveals:

“‘Quicksand’ is about dealing with the realisation that you’ll never be satisfied. I started writing it when I was home between tours in 2019 before finishing it with Joe Agius and Dan Nigro the next year. I was feeling guilty and ungrateful for not being happy about a few different things in my life that were technically going well. I had to work through some tough learned thought processes and emotions that had been working away for years to try to understand how to be happy with my present, and stop fixating on my past and future. The video digs deeper into showing this juxtaposition of such sadness and anger despite being surrounded by glamour and grandeur.”

No longer shying away from overt pop grandeur, she linked up with Olivia Rodrigo collaborator Dan Nigro as a co-writer, snagged Jorge Elbrecht (Sky Ferreira) as a producer, and enlisted Beach House drummer James Barrone. Suffice to say, it’s a gleaming display. The album itself is no light affair, however, focused on conquering its creator’s anxiety, it’s a work of self-reclamation.
