Ethiopian-Canadian singer and songwriter Ruth B. has revealed the details of her new album, Moments in Between, which arrives on June 11 through Downtown. It follows up her 2017 breakthrough Safe Haven, and was executive produced by Chairlift’s Patrick Wimberly, who has also worked with Solange and BPM faves Buscabulla.
The news comes along with a new single and video from Ruth, “Situation”, and she says it “is maybe my favorite song I’ve ever written. It sounds so much like me, and where I am now versus a few years ago.”
Co-written with Ido Zmishlany, “Situation” displays a more mature Ruth, both musically and emotionally. She’s still letting her heart get the better of her, but this time she’s not following it blindly, she needs clarity; “I’ve been wondering what’s been going on / what’s the situation?” she quizzes over weightless future R&B. She can’t deny her attraction, but she knows looks are only skin deep; “You’ve got pretty eyes, but I can tell they lie,” she sighs provocatively. The alluringly low-key mood of “Situation” gives her words an extra finesse; she clearly just wants to have a conversation – otherwise she’s moving on.
