South London four-piece Bleach Lab are back with their fourth single since late 2019. Building on the relationship-falling-apart theme of previous release “Sleep”, the dreamy “Never Be” examines the painful aftermath of love gone wrong. Lead singer Jenna Kyle explains:
“The track is about taking a physical and metaphorical step out from a wearing relationship and moving away. Continuing life in a new city that you were supposed to live in together and trying to navigate around a breakup that never truly had a resolution.”
“Never Be” marries the simple clarity of Kyle’s vocals with shimmering, reverb-soaked Cocteau Twins-esque guitars echoing in both channels. Soft layers of synths and slowly building, soaring guitars complete the wistful arrangement that also recalls the languid elegance of Mazzy Star. “I’m usually not the kinda girl to wanna tell you something,” sings Kyle, “because it could be nothing – or it could be everything.” It’s a song that evokes melancholy thoughts between fitful bouts of sleep.
