Bleach Lab glide through grief and anger on the dreampop gem “Old Ways”, announce debut EP

London-based dreamers Bleach Lab have built up quite a reputation with their clutch of early singles, most notably with November’s “Never Be”, and that’s coming to a head on March 19 when they release their debut EP, A Calm Sense of Surrounding. Along with that announcement they’ve also shared the EP’s opening track “Old Ways”, singer Jenna Kyle saying:

“Old Ways explores the angry side of the grieving process at the end of a relationship. Anger towards the way in which they treated you but also towards oneself for still missing them regardless.”

Bleach Lab maintain their dreamy sound on “Old Ways”, even in a song with this weighty of a theme, as the heavy lifting is done by Kyle’s fiery lyricism – placed perfectly alongside Frank Wates’ splashy and reflective guitar, which keeps things flowing perfectly. Kyle gets to show off the dexterity of her voice, from the despondent verses, to the strung-out admissions, to the cutting accusations that form the songs earworm hook: “I never said it / you made it up on your own.” An alchemical balancing act between serious emotion and blissful-sounding production, “Old Ways” is another feather in Bleach Lab’s cap – and is sure to put A Calm Sense of Surrounding on your most anticipated releases of the year.
