Wednesday‘s new album Bleeds will be out on 19 September through Dead Oceans.
“Bleeds is the spiritual successor to Rat Saw God, and I think the quintessential ‘Wednesday Creek Rock’ album,” the band’s vocalist and principal lyricist Karly Hartzman says. “This is what Wednesday songs are supposed to sound like. We’ve devoted a lot of our lives to figuring this out—and I feel like we did.”
We’ve already heard early single “Elderberry Wine” and along with the album announcement we get a ripping new single “Wound Up Here (By Holdin On)”.
“This song is inspired by a story my friend told me, from when he had to pull a body out of a creek in West Virginia. Someone had drowned but they took a few days to resurface because of the current,” Hartzman explains. “’I wound up here by holdin on’ is a line from my friend Evan Gray’s poetry book: Thickets Swamped in a Fence-Coated Briars. He gave me and Jake a copy of it to read on tour once and that line stuck out to me as pure genius so I stole it and wrote the rest of the song in my own words around it.”
The song is rife with Wednesday’s knotty, elemental guitar work that eventually roil together into a saw-toothed set of riffs. These add extra edge to Hartzmann’s gut-wrenching tales of smalltown heartache, where bodies wash up in the creek, new highways remain unfinished due to lack of funds and killers keep trophies of their victims. “I would up here by holdin on” she yelps, backed by MJ Lenderman’s stoic voice – not so much a statement of pride as of simple acknowledgement at the dumb luck of remaining alive while the wreckage of life flies all around.
The video for “Wound Up Here (By Holdin On)” was directed by Joriel Cura and can be seen below. Otherwise, find the track on streamers.
