Wayland deliver retro rock on “Hollywood Sign”

Wayland are a duo that hails from the heartland of America: Wayland, Michigan (population 4,400 souls). Their music is a fusion of rock, blues and country that reminds me of Tom Petty and Bonnie Raitt from yesteryear – and The War And Treaty and Zach Bryan on today’s charts. “Hollywood Sign” (featuring CeCe Frey) is one of the highlights of their new album On The Way.

“Hollywood Sign” is a hooky throwback to the days when midtempo rock ruled the airwaves. The song has a Neil Young-style authenticity and grit. Both frontman Mitchel Arnold and lead guitarist Phillip Vilenski are musical vagabonds. They sometimes hang out in Joshua Tree, California, Gram Parsons’ old stomping grounds. And they’ve been a supporting act on two celebrity rock cruises (Kiss and Bon Jovi).

Wayland’s On The Way album is out now.
