Toronto rapper DijahSB asserts their independence on the sun-kissed “By Myself”, from their new album

Toronto rapper DijahSB today reveals plans for a new album: it’s called Head Above The Waters and comes out on April 23. They have also shared a new single from the record, “By Myself”, which was produced by Harrison (Jon Hopkins, Cashmere Cat, Ryan Hemsworth). DijahSB says:

“’By Myself’ gives you a little bit of insight on what my album ‘Head Above The Waters’ tries to tackle. I also wanted to slow it down and show people that I’m not always about sh*t that can make you dance; I got bars too. Harrison is like a brother to me and i haven’t even met him yet. He really blessed me with a hot ass beat.”

It’s a “hot ass beat” indeed, recalling Madlib at his loungiest, with gliding keys and a jazzy rhythm, leaving plenty of space for DijahSB to show us the many facets of their flow. A display of supreme confidence, “By Myself” is DijahSB’s reflection on their own talents and self-sufficiency, leaning into the relaxed bars with a loquacious flow that is nonetheless assertive and dominant. With myriad metaphors for how they carry themselves through the world, we get a vision of the artist and person that is simultaneously intimidating and smile-inducing – a perfect anthem to carry you through the weekend.
