Tei Shi vents her frustrations via the sway of “¿QUIÉN TE MANDA?”, announces new EP

Tei Shi turned plenty of heads with her debut album, 2017’s Crawl Space, and has essentially been on a tear ever since. She may have made it look easy, but she’s since been plagued by a demon all too many artists face: feeling betrayed by a label.

She’s just announced her new EP, Bad Premonition, will arrive on March 17. The EP, and in particular new single “¿QUIÉN TE MANDA?” were born following a period during a draining period in which she essentially lost her freedom as an artist. Co-produced alongside former Chairlift member Patrick Wimberly and Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jake Portrait – a duo who recently help helm Lil Yachty’s exploratory Let’s Start Here – the bilingual track explores the very feelings of frustration and deception Tei Shi felt during her time spent trapped in the doldrums of forced creative inertia.

Speaking on the track, she reflects, “¿QUIÉN TE MANDA?’ is a song about deception. It tells the tale of deceit – of trusting in others and as a result ending up losing control over oneself to them. When I wrote it, I had gone through a series of consecutive situations in the music industry where I’d been locked into contracts that ultimately took away my freedom as an artist and my ability to release music and move forward with my career. After ending up in a final similar situation, I went through the long and arduous process of getting my freedom and independence back.
