Tan Cologne — the New Mexico-based duo of Lauren Green and Marissa Macias — will release their new album, Unknown Beyond, on June 20 via Labrador Records. Written, performed, and recorded alone at their home in Taos, Northern New Mexico, the band fell into these songs as they grappled with familial loss and grief over the change of childhood geographies. Veering away from the organic psychedelia of their earlier efforts, this album revels in atmospheres of droning dream-pop and ambient shoegaze. It feels far more aligned with the supernatural character of their surrounding landscapes, seeking a spiritual resolution if no tangible processes can be divined.
“We looked for signs and signals during the recording process,” Green and Macias say. “If we saw a shooting star, imagined a fire burning on a hill, or remembered an old satellite dish in someone’s yard, we explored that lyrically. Those visual guides became our pathways to the album. They were the signs to move forward.”
They offer “Cloud of Mirrors” as a glimpse into the internal mechanics of the new record, a gauzy mix of shifting rhythms and iridescent melodies. The song surrounds you, subsuming every part of your body, leaving no trace of you in its wake. Beats whisper in the distance as airy guitars spin tales of wild wanderings and intimate realizations.
“’Cloud of Mirrors’ is about life happening to you and having to deal with whatever is handed to you – a chemtrail above, being ‘over it,’ knowing we are all interconnected and a part of the disaster and the beauty,” the band explains. “The idea that we are a mirrored image of the sky – manmade or natural, or even simulated. A reflection of everything around you being internally present.”
