Syd takes us on a steamy sunshine drive in “Fast Car”

We last heard from Syd back in February, when she shared her anti-Valentine’s jam “Missing Out”. She returns today and has flipped the script entirely, with “Fast Car” being a loved-up bop. She says: “I wanted to make something for the gay Black girls. I want them to see themselves in this and in me.”

It may be for the gay Black girls, but any red-blooded person will find “Fast Car” a pulse-quickening affair. A slick and modern pop song, it glides beautifully while leaving plenty of space for Syd’s adoring words and sweet voice. She wants kisses and affection right here, right now, in the car, and she doesn’t care if people are honking behind them. Before long they’re pulling over to the side of the road, Syd begging “do with me what you like”. The second verse gets even closer, as they move the car somewhere sequestered, turn the music up and get down to business. “Fast Car” is capped off by a bristling guitar solo, during which time you’re left to imagine what wordless activities may now be ensuing.
