Stephen Malkmus needs your help coming up with a clean version of “Senator”

By now, if you’re a Stephen Malkmus fan, you’ve probably heard the raunchy lead single, “Senator,” from his upcoming album Mirror Traffic (if not, stream it below). It’s a catchy tune, certainly catchy enough to get a decent amount of radio play on alt-rock radio, but there’s the little problem of using the phrase “blow job” – that can’t be aired on public radio. Rather than pen a clean version himself (he must be worn out after writing 15 brand new tracks for the upcoming album), Malkmus is opening the door to you fans to fill in the blank.

Of course there is a prize (aside from having Malkmus sing your lyric). The winner will get a one-of-a-kind 7″ single of “Senator” with the uncut studio A-side, but your clean version on the B-side. Head to whatdoesthesenatorwant.com right now to enter your lyric, which can be up to 25 characters. Submissions close in just over a month on August 23rd, and the winner will be picked on September 15th. Here’s “Senator” for your listening pleasure – get your thinking caps on!

Mirror Traffic will be released by Matador on August 23rd.
