NY’s Afro-punk Festival cancelled due to Hurricane Irene + other Irene cancellations

Though music events are pretty low on the list of concerns when dealing with something as potentially devastating as Hurricane Irene, there are likely to be many cancelled events along the eastern seaboard and we have our first one: NY’s Afro-punk Festival which was set to feature Janelle Monae, Das Racist, Toro Y Moi, Cee-Lo Green, Santigold, and many more.

Below is the statement from the festival, and we will keep you posted if there will be any makeups or the like.

The City of New York has rescinded all event permits for Saturday, August 27th and Sunday, August 28th because of the impending Hurricane Irene. The Afro-punk festival has been barred from holding any public assembly in Commodore Barry Park this weekend. Afro-punk staff have been meeting with officials and sponsors to try and avoid cancellation but have had to cancel this weekend’s festival due to safety concerns. The event organizers are regrouping to plan the next steps and will keep the public updated.

Update: Rolling Stone reports that Dave Matthews Band Caravan, set for Governors Island this weekend in New York, has had its second and third days postponed due to Hurricane Irene. No word yet on when these dates will be made up.
