It’s easy, or rather lazy, to pigeonhole any artist after hearing a single track. Obviously it’s not a habit any of us want to admit to, but it can happen. Canyons are a perfect example of why this tactic can get you into trouble.
Listen to their first single on DFA Records last year, “Fire Eyes,” and you’ll find yourself immediately loving or swiftly dismissing their strangely minimalist disco sound. The release was cast aside rather quickly, seeming to influence Canyons reinvention for their debut album on Modular, due out Q1 2011. Their first single from the album, “My Rescue,” trades the diva-style vocals on “Fire Eyes” for guitar driven verses and congo drum interludes. The results sound similar label mates Tame Impala, whom Canyons remixed earlier this year. “My Rescue” packs a rather large punch, showcasing the many talents and ambitions of the duo.
