Marie Davidson teams with L’Œil Nu for new album Renegade Breakdown and shares cavalier title track

Marie Davidson has announced a new album to follow up her excellent 2018 record Working Class Woman; it’s called Renegade Breakdown and is coming out through Ninja Tune on September 25. The new record sees Davidson teaming with L’Œil Nu, who are her husband and partner in Essaie Pas Pierre Guerineau and their old friend Asaël R. Robitaille.

The trio has shared “Renegade Breakdown”, the title track of the new album, which picks up the thread of Working Class Woman and finds Davidson reflecting on her life as a working artist and touring musician – and she does not hold back any of her true feelings. Over steadily forward-moving synth and drums she is commanding, flashes of guitar and bass synth flanking her unimpressed observations: “Your pointless opinion, I couldn’t care less/ How do you come up with such meaninglessness?” While “Renegade Breakdown” does not evolve massively across its six minutes, the trio keep new layers of sound sneaking in, while Davidson remains utterly compelling at the centre of it all, domineering and defiant: “I’ll tell it to your face for once and for all / My life is anti-strategic; lying between comic and tragic.”

Marie Davidson & L’Œil Nu’s Renegade Breakdown is out September 25 through Ninja Tune. You can find Davidson on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Bandcamp.
