“Dance for You” is the second glimpse we are given of Dirty Projectors’ forthcoming LP, Swing Lo Magellan. The lighthearted tune sits in the center of the album, and is in exemplary DP form (kind of an oxymoron). “I ran across cyanide plains/ Mind like a prison cell, but feet untethered and sane,” Longstreth croons into a syncopated shuffle. There seems to be a developing theme with exploration and geography, emphasized by the album’s namesake. His delivery, while both cryptic and subdued, is adorned with an uplifting undertone; think of a wanderer to whom getting lost is not a horror but a hankering. Longstreth sings with unwavering faith, “There is an answer/ I haven’t found it/ But I will keep dancing until I do.” Whether or not there is an answer is of minor importance—the dance is delightful.
